The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at NIH is searching for an outstanding clinician investigator to lead the Intramural Stroke Branch. The Stroke Branch has advanced both basic and clinical science in its laboratories and through the research of the NIH stroke service at busy area hospitals. The NIH stroke service has strong collaborations with local hospitals, including Suburban Hospital and the NINDS Stroke Network regional coordinating center at the MedStar Health Research Institute-National Rehabilitation Hospital and Washington Hospital Center. As part of its clinical activities, the Stroke Branch directs an ACGME-accredited Vascular Neurology fellowship. The Stroke Branch has a research program underway in acute traumatic brain injury at the area hospitals in collaboration with Department of Defense investigators at the adjacent Walter Reed National Navy Medical Center.

The Division of Intramural Research boasts strong programs in movement disorders, neuroimmunology, neurogenetics, cortical plasticity, surgical neurology, and neuroimaging relevant to neurological disorders and stroke. There is a large and active basic neuroscience community, which has outstanding programs in ion channel biophysics, synaptic physiology, neural circuit function, cell biology, and developmental biology.

The successful individual will be expected to develop and direct a lab-based research program. We are particularly interested in investigators using modern genomic techniques, systems biology techniques, and/or advanced imaging techniques. The individual should have demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to build and lead a translational research program. Experience in application of clinical research methodology to the study of disease mechanisms and testing new therapies is desirable. In addition, the individual will have excellent skills in structuring an original, productive, and important research program of international repute; communicating that research program to the wider scientific community; and collaborating effectively with leaders in the field. A M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree is required, and the individual must have an active medical license in the United States and be board-certified in Vascular Neurology.

Laboratory/clinical facilities, shared research facilities, research funds, and salary are competitive with premier academic institutions. This is a tenure-eligible position for exceptionally accomplished applicants. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The salary range for a Senior Investigator is $127,572 to $275,000 and a full civil service benefits (including retirement, health, life and long term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) package is available.

Applicants must submit a CV including bibliography and description of research interests, a vision statement for the Stroke Branch, and three references. Applications will be accepted from April 21-April 30. Review of applications is expected to begin on May 1, 2019.

All materials should be sent to: Caren Collins, Office of the Scientific Director, Division of Intramural Research, NINDS, NIH, 35A Convent Drive, Room GF-145, Bethesda, MD 20892 or collinsca@ninds.nih.gov.
