General Summary

Under the direction of the Clinical Chair, Brain Innovation Center, the Section Chief, Traumatic Brain Injury, leads the medical practice of attending physicians, as well as the clinical contingent of the interdisciplinary Brain Injury team within the Brain Innovation Center. The Section Chief also functions as an attending physician on the medical staff.

The Section Chief, Traumatic Brain Injury, is accountable for meeting established section standards for quality of care, patient care practice and leading or co-leading research initiatives. The Section Chief also shares responsibility with a designated operations leader for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating section success, using metrics and key performance indicators (e.g., safety, outcome, operating, regulatory and financial).

Section Chief, Traumatic Brain Injury:

  1. Establishes practice standards, and, with others, oversees quality of interdisciplinary clinical care, including appropriate development and implementation of clinical protocols, performance standards and policies across the system of care.
  2. Ensures evidenced-based scientific approach to patient care delivery and collaborates with clinicians and scientists in Traumatic Brain Injury clinical research.
  3. Participates in research within Section of Traumatic Brain Injury, either as principle investigator or as co-investigator. Intra- and extramural funding, and publishing scientific articles is desirable.
  4. Oversees clinical quality, appropriateness and effectiveness of therapeutic plan, involving all team members, patient safety, outcomes and satisfaction, and ensuring an effective and safe care environment.
  5. Implements strategy and service development consistent with patient, referrer, managed-care/payor expectations.
  6. Serves as practicing attending physician in compliance with bylaws, policies and procedures for overseeing patient care.
  7. Participates in assigned medical staff committees, chairing when appropriate.
  8. Participates in medical education activities for residents and fellows, including teaching medical students and residents, Grand Rounds, continuing education and in-service training.
  9. Participates in Traumatic Brain Injury program planning and marketing activities; develops and maintains contact with referral sources, managed-care organizations and other key contacts.
  10. Shares responsibility with designated operations leader for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating section success, using metrics and key performance indicators (e.g., safety, outcome, operating, regulatory and financial).
  11. Maintains strong relationships with academic institutions and professional organizations; fosters an energetic teaching/learning environment within Section of Traumatic Brain Injury.
  12. Collaborates with leaders and staff in other Shirley Ryan AbilityLab programs toward the achievement of overall organizational goals.
  13. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interests of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. 

Required Skills


  1. Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Illinois.
  2. Successful completion of a residency program with Board Certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or other appropriate specialty, and Brain Injury Medicine.
  3. Faculty appointment at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, required unless otherwise agreed to by Chief Medical Officer.
  4. At least five years’ experience in program leadership role with significant focus on care of patients with Traumatic Brain Injury.
  5. Quantitative skills necessary to initiate and review clinical and business analyses.
  6. Experience with and knowledge of fundraising.
  7. Outstanding interpersonal skills, including proven ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, referring parties, staff, managed-care organizations and payors, scientists and other internal and external stakeholders. 

Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to the Clinical Chair, Brain Innovation Center.
