The registered nurse provides clinical andadministrative support to the program. The RN performs therapeutic measuresprescribed and delegated by the physician. Participates in patient educationand rehabilitation and provides interpretation of treatment to the patient andthe patients family. The RN coordinates unit activities and assuresaccountability of all assigned tasks.

Duties (included butnot limited to):

  • Demonstrates clinical knowledge ofpsychiatric nursing and maintains the highest quality of comprehensive patientcare.
  • Displays effective communication skillsas evidenced by the ability to maintain therapeutic relationships withpatients, families, physicians and staff.
  • Is able to set limits as needed byrecognizing potential behavior problems and does so in a caring and consistentmanner.
  • Utilizes knowledge of growth anddevelopment, psychopathology, and psychosocial systems.
  • Has an accurate knowledge ofpsycho-dynamics and therapeutic processes as demonstrated by effectiveintervention and resolution of problems as they occur, and communication of theprocesses to others.
  • Displays understanding of familydynamics by responding appropriately to family members when needed.
  • Has a comprehensive knowledge ofexisting policies and procedures and utilizes the standards stated as evidencedby independent functioning and carrying out the philosophy of the NursingDepartment.
  • Consistently documents in the medicalrecord all pertinent clinical information on a daily basis and as set forth inpolicy and procedure manual.
  • Utilizes the nursing process, whichincludes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation.
  • Consistently completes all nursingassessments accurately with timeframes set forth in policy and proceduremanual.
  • Participate in the initiation of mastertreatment plan along with other key program staff.
  • Attend treatment planning meetings andconferences to participate in patients treatment process and progress.
  • Participate in discharge planning andreferrals.
  • Utilizes treatment plan as means tocommunicate care to entire clinical team.
  • Demonstrates professional skills and performsthe tasks needed to maintain a therapeutic milieu and optimum patient care.
  • Examines physician orders forcompleteness, accuracy, clarity and questions when appropriate. Correctlytranscribes orders and documents implementation.
  • Administers prescribed treatment andmedications correctly.
  • Documents administration of medicationand treatments completely and accurately on the Medication AdministrationRecord and progress notes in the medical record.
  • Is privileged in restraint/seclusion andfollows hospital policy.
  • Displays competency in medical aspectsof patient care as evidenced by recognizing signs and symptoms of medicalconditions, intervening appropriately and documenting adequately in theTreatment Plan and progress notes.
  • Conducts patient groups as evidenced bydocumentation in patients medical record.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is consistentwith leadership.
  • Demonstrates good organizational skillsbased on the needs of the patients and program as evidenced by followingthrough on assigned tasks in a smooth and effective manner and determiningpriorities.
  • Has a basic understanding of appropriatestaffing patterns and nursing care hours and able to maintain appropriatelevels in absence of Nurse Manager.
  • Assumes supervision of nursing staffwhen directed by Nurse Manager.
  • Demonstrates skills in admission,discharge and transfer of patients.
  • Demonstrates a professional attitude andemotional stability when coping with stress, accepting guidance and evaluatingown performance.
  • Acts as a role model, by utilizingprofessional standards, motivating peers and co-workers, stimulating growth anddevelopment in others.
  • Responsible for maintaining upgradedknowledge in psychiatric nursing by engaging in activities that will enhancecurrent knowledge base.
  • Attends unit meetings as specified byNurse Manager in order to receive current information, and assists the NurseManager in communication of this information to other staff members.
  • Complete all competency requirements ina timely manner.
  • Performs other duties and specialprojects as assigned by Nurse Manager.
  • Helps promote program through referraldevelopment and community education events as assigned by Nurse Manager.

  • Must possess at least an academic diploma in nursing and be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the appropriate state.


  • Must possess at least 1 year of recent inpatient psychiatric nursing experience.


  • Must be BLS certified
  • Must be CPI certified upon hire
  • Hold a license to practice as a RN in the appropriate state.
  • Psychiatric nursing certification preferred
