Position Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities listed are not intended to be all inclusive, but rather indicate the primary emphasis of the job and establish the parameters for the necessary skill, effort, responsibilities, and the working conditions that make up the job. These can vary depending on the stroke program needs.

  1. Facilitates the clinical care of stroke program patients to ensure all patients receive comprehensive and timely treatment/interventions that are consistent with clinical practice guidelines.

  2. Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, range of treatment and care of low and high risk neurological/neurosurgical patients.

  3. Coordinates care for the neurological patients across the continuum including stroke screening, education, follow up phone calls, support group and community outreach and other activities as assigned.

  4. Makes daily clinical rounds on all stroke patients to ensure compliance with evidence based core measures and care incorporating service and patient perception of care into daily rounds/visits.

  5. Collaborates with the Director Neurosciences, nursing and physician leadership to provide real time and structured education for staff.

  6. Assists in navigating patients/families through the acute hospitalization and transitions of care, keeping them informed and educated appropriately.

  7. Participate in hospital teams and committees, presents lectures, inservices and conferences and maintains /improves current knowledge and competency in this specialty area.

  8. Assists with abstracting and maintenance of reporting requirements for the stroke program.

  9. Collaborates with members of the quality department in data abstraction, analysis, outcomes reporting and identification of improvement opportunities with development and execution of actions to enhance quality of care to neuroscience patients

  10. Function as a role model in the use of nursing process and develop, introduce, and evaluate new approaches to stroke nursing practice.

  11. Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team (PT, OT, Speech, Pharmacy, social worker, case manager, home health agency or other team members) to assist in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating care delivery for the patient population.

  12. Assist with coordination of activities to maintain survey readiness

Department Specific Criteria:

  1. Self directs; takes initiative to resolve clinical and service opportunities.

  2. Independent and autonomous to perform roles and responsibilities.

  3. Exceptional customer service communication skills

  4. Responds to emergencies on select patients for assessment and treatment recommendations based on approved protocols and orders (ex: Code Stroke)

  5. Acts as a clinical resource for staff education in area of expertise

  6. Keeps abreast of the latest clinical studies/evidence and embraces professional growth and development.

  7. Uses expertise to help develop protocols and clinical guidelines

  8. Attends and facilitates appropriate neuroscience committees, endovascular conference and educational classes


Demonstrated knowledge with each of the required area of expertise

Interpersonal skills to successfully interact with patients, guests, physicians and other employees

Current licensure by Tennessee Board of Nursing

Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in critical care and/or ED

Current BLS, NIHSS, ACLS preferred
