The NBME is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality examinations for the health professions. Protection of the health of the public through state-of-the-art assessment of health professionals is the mission of the NBME, along with a major commitment to research and development in evaluation and measurement. The NBME was founded in 1915 because of the need for a voluntary, nationwide examination that medical licensing authorities could accept as the standard by which to judge candidates for medical licensure. Since that time, it has continued without interruption to provide high-quality examinations for this purpose and has become a model and a resource of international stature in testing methodologies and evaluation in medicine. Although the NBME's mission is centered on assessment of physicians, it encompasses the spectrum of health professionals along the continuum of education, training, and practice and includes research in evaluation as well as development of assessment instruments.

The NBME has over 500 employees and is located in Philadelphia's University City neighborhood, home to some of the country's most esteemed universities, nonprofit research institutes, and research and teaching hospitals.


Reporting to the Vice President for Licensure Programs, this physician will lead many operational aspects and operational enhancements in USMLE.  This individual will also participate in and lead certain USMLE strategic initiatives in accordance with the USMLE program's strategic objectives.  

The Medical Advisor will also represent USMLE with certain national and international stakeholders. This will include interaction with USMLE test development and governance committees as well as with organizations and entities who seek more information about the USMLE program. The individual will play a key role in prioritizing existing operational USMLE research, and well as conceptualizing some strategic USMLE research.


  • USMLE Operations
    • Provide oversight for USMLE security, as well as the execution of prioritized initiatives related to USMLE security stemming from recent USMLE security audit.
    • Serve as primary USMLE staff to USMLE Committee on Individualized Review.
    • Supervise and be accountable for various USMLE continuous improvement projects related to improved cycle time of processes, cost reduction and more efficient committee operations (working with Test Development).
    • Assist in annual prioritization, scoping and execution of priorities related to Step 2 CS.
    • In collaboration with Vice President and USMLE senior staff, liaise with USMLE Test Material Development Committees and Interdisciplinary Review Committees.
    • Along with Vice President Licensure and senior USMLE staff, support NBME finance and USMLE budget committee as needed.
    • Serve as primary USMLE staff member for USMLE data sharing requests, data sharing policies and review of research utilizing USMLE data.

  • USMLE Strategy
    • Assist in developing and leading /supporting USMLE strategy depending on project. This will include:
      • Working with partners FSMB and ECFMG to design and execute collaborative enhancements to examinee experience (e.g., registration/ transcripts)
      • Design and support USMLE construct redesign and accompanying assessment advancements - working with NBME's Center for Advance Assessment, Test Development, Psychometrics and Data Analysis, as well as external collaborators.
      • Participate in high-level initiatives related to USMLE strategy such as executing initiatives related to the recent Invitational Conference on USMLE Scoring (InCUS) to internal and external stakeholders.
  • USMLE Outreach
    • Serve to support USMLE outreach activities including marketing and communications, social media, and USMLE medical student and resident advisory panel.
    • Serve as representative of USMLE for activities related to state medical board engagement, including attending meetings and providing presentations.
    • Work in supportive capacity, along with Vice President Licensure, on projects with outside organizations (AMA, AAMC) in support of USMLE and Medical Education.

  • USMLE Governance
    • Serve in support role to Vice President Licensure Programs to USMLE Management Committee and Composite Committee. Duties including:
      • Working with USMLE staff to create agenda materials and execute efficient and effective meetings.
      • Review and suggest amendments to USMLE policies.
      • Conceptualization of topics and presentations to committees.
      • Review and finalization of minutes from USMLE Governance Committees.

  • USMLE Research
    • Serve as USMLE representative to NBME Research Implementation Committee.
    • Complete timely reviews of USMLE data requests and staff publications reviews relevant to USMLE.

  • Clinical Practice / Teaching
    • It is expected that the Medical Advisor will spend 10% of their time engaged in clinical work, preferably in a teaching capacity.



Skills and Abilities

  • The Medical Advisor, USMLE Program should have excellent standing in the medical community
  • Possess a large network of stakeholders in academic medicine
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Effectively distill client and stakeholder needs
  • Ability to develop collaborative relations, both internally and externally


Minimum 10 years


  • Doctoral degree (M.D. or D.O)
  • Additional Masters level training in measurement science preferred (MHS, MPH, MEd)


  • Holds unrestricted medical license
  • Holds ABMS or AOA Board Certification
