This is an exceptional opportunity to join a top school of nursing in the U.S. as the Executive Vice Dean/Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (EVD/SADAA) and Chief Academic Officer within the OHSU School of Nursing.

The School seeks a dynamic, visionary leader to further develop an already strong core of nursing programs. The EVD/SADAA will incorporate the latest trends and strategies and will bridge current and future best practices to build an even more innovative, leading edge nursing school.

The ideal candidate is an innovative, collaborative, servant leader with demonstrated academic administrative leadership. The EVD/SADAA should be positioned for a complex major academic health science university that includes five campuses of the School of Nursing and a University-level Campus for Rural Health. OHSU is an interprofessional and collaborative environment fostering a “team of teams” mentality. The EVD/SADAA joins this environment with the expectation to develop a vision to motivate and work with others to implement and execute new strategies.

The EVD/SADAA reports directly to the Dean of the School. As a member of the dean’s executive team, the EVD/SADAA works closely with other Associate Deans in the School to provide collaborative leadership. In addition, the individual works interprofessionally with peer academic associate deans in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Public Health and the College of Pharmacy to bring strategic interprofessional vision to the University.

• Recognized internationally for developing a model for educational collaboration in conjunction with the Oregon Consortium of Nursing Education (OCNE).
• Since 2006 the School has included population health in the baccalaureate curriculum, and in 2013 it established the Interprofessional Care Access Network (I-CAN). This is a nurse-led care coordination program in which nursing, medical, dental, nutrition, and pharmacy students gain experience in addressing social determinants of health for disadvantaged people and populations and intervene to improve outcomes and reduce costs. In 2019 the School was one of six schools of nursing in the nation recognized by the RWJ Foundation and Center to Champion Nursing in America for promising education/practice models in Population Health and Social Determinants of Health.
• In 2020, five grants from HRSA supported the School’s education/training programs for a total of $2,716,294, and faculty had 50 active grants for a total of $5,706,287 in research funding to the School.

POSITION SUMMARY: The EVD/SADAA serves as the second in command, under the Dean, and Chief Academic Officer within the School, responsible for high quality programs of teaching and learning. The EVD/SADDA is the administrative officer who leads a team to facilitate planning, administration, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of academic programs. Responsibilities include educational innovation and leading a “team of teams” across programs and campuses to advance the School’s leading-edge initiatives. The EVD/SADAA provides thought leadership and strategic guidance to program directors and faculty in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the curricula. The EVD/SADAA has the opportunity to influence the full spectrum of teaching and learning, including education technology, interprofessional education, and clinical simulation/pedagogies in a school nationally recognized for innovation and collaboration. The EVD/SADAA oversees program evaluation and quality improvement, collaborating with academic and advisory councils in assuring program quality and academic/regulatory standards. The EVD/SADAA is responsible for statewide coordination across degree programs, and between the School and University Academic Affairs. The EVD/SADAA represents the Dean at designated School, University, professional, and community group meetings. During temporary absences of the Dean, the EVD/SADAA may function as the administrator in charge of the School.

KEY RESULT AREAS:

Academic Program Leadership

• Represents the School of Nursing in University and/or professional nursing academic initiatives.
• Sets aspirational vision for a portfolio of innovative academic programs to address complex and evolving health care needs and systems.
• Provides intellectual and strategic leadership for academic programs, for recruitment and retention of the faculty of the whole, with the collective expertise to implement leading edge pedagogy and academic programs.
• Advocates for the School’s academic mission, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and educational support needs of faculty across campuses and programs.
• Collaborates with the Senior Associate Dean for Research and practice leaders so that missions are aligned and compatible, and faculty’s effort across multiple missions is experienced as coherent and satisfying.
• Meets with those engaged in the practice of nursing, other educators, and scholars to identify new areas or formats for educational programming.
• Explores opportunities for creating shared value through academic initiatives between the School and other parties, within the University and health system, as well as around the state.
• Oversees systems to support academic program planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Oversees development and implementation of academic policies.

Administrative Oversight and Functions

• Aligns complex organizational systems for strategic change and continuous improvement in the academic mission.
• Coordinates and approves School reports submitted to University, regulatory, or accrediting bodies on behalf of the School’s academic programs.
• Provides strategic and operational leadership for the School’s Office of Academic Affairs. Responsible for recruitment, hiring, managing, and performance evaluation of directly reporting OAA staff.
• Supervises and facilitates the work of academic Assistant Deans, and the Assistant Deans for Simulation and Academic Technology, Academic Services, and Assessment, Evaluation, and Quality Improvement.
• Supervises and facilitates ongoing monitoring of systems to support clinical site contracts and clinical placements, in collaboration with the Manager of the Clinical Placement Office and respective Assistant and Associate Deans.
• Collaboratively participates in resource management and budget planning.
• In absence of the Dean, has signatory authority on contracts, documents, and letters.

Decision-Making Authority for:

• Resolution and implementation of academic programming and policies.
• Academic program evaluation plans.
• Compliance with accreditation and other professional standards.

Qualifications:

• Eligible for licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Oregon.
• Earned doctorate in nursing with at least seven years of progressive experience in nursing higher education; eligible for rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
• Experience in and passion for leading change; knowledge of undergraduate and graduate curricula in nursing, simulation, and pedagogy.
• Possess a clear understanding of the importance of diversity for a University/academic health center and the ability and skill to help lead the institution towards achieving its strategic goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Commitment to lifelong learning and continuous improvement in leadership development.
• Evidence of success in academic scholarship, such as with funded training grants/centers and educational publications/presentations.
• Interprofessional collaboration and leadership are highly desirable.
• Expected leadership qualities include capacity for self-reflection, emotional intelligence, tolerance for ambiguity, and skill in leading groups toward common ground.
