Position Summary

The Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota Medical School seeks a dynamic and innovative Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon to Chair the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The Chair will lead and direct successful clinical, research and education programs that span the breadth of a wide-ranging field. With 41 full time and affiliate faculty, the Department provides clinical expertise in head and neck oncologic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, otology-neurotology, general otolaryngology, laryngology, rhinology-skull base surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as speech-language pathology and audiology. 

Education within the department includes a commitment to medical student education and curriculum, an ACGME-accredited residency program of 20 residents and fellowships in Head and Neck Cancer Research, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Pediatric Otolaryngology and Otology/Neurotology. 

Active research programs led by faculty-investigators include multiple NIH and DOD-funded extramural grants. The Department provides full-spectrum otolaryngology care for adults and children in five clinical practice sites in the Minneapolis metro area. The Chair provides direction, vision, oversight, development and accountability across the full range of the academic mission, and partners with colleagues across the Medical School and across the broader health system. 

Principal Duties 

The selected Chair will be an accomplished Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon with success in scholarly pursuits including the procurement of federal research funding. The Department is ranked #13 nationally in NIH funding via the Blue Ridge Rankings and the next Chair will be committed to growing this excellence further. The Chair will be responsible for developing effective relationships with system and local clinical and administrative leaders to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Duty allocations are approximate and include: 

Management and Leadership (30%): The selected Chair will be responsible for managing and leading the Department, which will include working with faculty and staff to leverage their strengths, developing and enhancing Medical School-wide academic initiatives, empowering individuals to contribute to the mission of the health system, identifying and implementing ways to ensure a cohesive and collaborative culture, and promoting engagement with Department strategic initiatives. The Chair of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery will report to the Dean of the Medical School. 

Clinical programs, Research and Education Activity (55%): The successful applicant must have a demonstrated record of successful clinical practice as well as excellence in research and education, and be able to demonstrate the capacity to further grow and enhance the research and educational missions of the Department. Clinical activities will correlate with the incumbent's surgical specialty. The chairperson will participate in training of medical students, residents, and fellows, and will be expected to provide high quality care to the patients of MHealth. The Chair will be active in creating and enhancing clinical programs and service lines, aligning clinical care pathways across multiple care locations, maintaining a track record of responsible fiscal oversight, and establishing collaborative relationships with administrators and physicians. 

Faculty Development (15%): Ideal candidates will possess a record of mentorship and be passionate about the growth and national prominence of Departmental faculty. Effort spent in these activities will enhance the contributions made by Department locally, regionally and nationally. 

Education 

  • MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent, board certification in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and academic accomplishments that merit an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
  • Eligibility for a Minnesota medical license.
