The College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama (USA) in partnership with Korn Ferry, announces a national search for the Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The leader of the Department will be responsible for the academic and clinical programs in women’s healthcare at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and USA Health. 

As a key member of the physician leadership team of USA Health, the successful candidate must demonstrate excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. The candidate possess broad, contemporary market insight regarding the current status, trends, and outlook for the healthcare delivery system, with a solid grasp of healthcare finance and the ability to effectively participate in strategic planning and program development initiatives. 

The new Chair will be expected to work with faculty to create a strategic plan that leads to robust clinical and translational research growth, taking advantage of the many resources in the clinical environment. USA Health’s strategic plan identified orthopaedic surgery as a vital clinical service line, and the Chair will be one of the key leaders in the implementation of the programs within this enterprise. 

The Chair must be a compelling values-driven leader with an established academic track record and possess the skillset and experience to lead a clinical and educational enterprise whose passion for the triumvirate mission will energize the faculty, staff, and learners, focusing their efforts on a strategic vision of excellence across the board. Mentoring of junior faculty and recruitment and career development of young faculty are critically important components of the position. Importantly, the Chair must be viewed by all stakeholders as a willing collaborator with colleagues both within and outside of the Department. 

Qualified candidates must have an MD or DO degree, be Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery. A minimum of 10-15 years of postgraduate clinical experience in the field, gained within a major teaching hospital or academic medical center environment. Five or more years of successful and progressive leadership experience in a Medical Director, Division Chief, Center Director, Associate Chair or Chair role. Academically eligible for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor. Licensure by the Alabama Medical Board will be required prior to commencement of employment. 

Mobile is a fast growing, family-friendly city with a vibrant downtown. It is centrally located in the Gulf Coast with a temperate climate and low cost of living. There are many cultural and outdoor activities with proximity to river and sandy beaches, such as: home of the Airbus and Austal; home of the first Mardis Gras in the US; located on Mobile Bay with access to fishing, sailing, watersports; less than an hour from the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf Shores, Orange Beach), with white sand, blue water, all watersports activities and part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
