The University of Arizona’s (UArizona) College of Medicine – Tucson (COM-T), invites inquiries, nominations, and expressions of interest for the role of Chair, Department of Anesthesiology.  Reporting directly to Dean Michael M.I. Abecassis, the chair will work collaboratively with the leaders of COM-T and Banner University Medicine to build upon excellence in existing clinical, teaching and team-based research programs to position the department for growth and transformation.

The Department of Anesthesiology is currently comprised of 30 faculty, 41 residents, 3 fellows and an excellent team of CRNA’s covering more than 30 operating rooms across two hospitals including Banner University Medical Center Tucson and Banner - University Medical Center South. The clinical service covers ambulatory, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, obstetric, pediatric, trauma, transplantation, and vascular surgery, as well as acute and chronic pain and critical care. Research programs span basic and clinical research with funding from the NIH and private industry. The Department of Anesthesiology moved into its new home in the recently dedicated Tower 1, a 9 story, 670,000 square foot hospital, part of the Banner University Medical Center Tucson expansion project. The new peri-operative space includes 22 state of the art operating rooms. The new Chair will have the opportunity to recruit new faculty and reinvigorate scholarship for the Department.

The UA College of Medicine is part of the University of Arizona Health Sciences, the statewide leader in biomedical research and health professions training, with over 900 faculty and $200 million in annual research grants and contracts. The UA Health Sciences includes the UA Colleges of Medicine (Phoenix and Tucson), Nursing, Pharmacy and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, with main campus locations in Tucson and the growing Phoenix Biomedical Campus in downtown Phoenix. In February 2015, Banner Health merged with the University of Arizona Health Network in Tucson, Arizona, to form Banner – University Medicine. At the heart of this merger is academic medicine – research, teaching and patient care – across three academic medical centers in Tucson and Phoenix.

The successful candidate will be an academic anesthesiologist with a national reputation and a substantial record of research, teaching, clinical, and administrative accomplishments. He or she will have the knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians and other health professionals, researchers, and educators while embracing the values of quality and financial sustainability.
