Job Description: Assistant Director for Research in Medical Education

The Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine seeks a doctoral-level education researcher to be the Assistant Director of Medical Education Research.

The Assistant Director will provide research expertise and assistance in designing, conducting, and analyzing education research studies and publishing educational scholarship related to faculty development in teaching and learning, and education of medical students, residents, and clinical fellows. The Assistant Director will also serve as faculty for the Shapiro Institute Medical Education Scholarship Program, an ongoing training program in research and scholarship for residents, fellows, and faculty at BIDMC. This is a faculty-level position at the Instructor level in the Harvard Medical School Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.

The Assistant Director of Medical Education Research will report directly to the Director for Education Research and will work as part of a highly collaborative team including the Executive Director of the Shapiro Institute for Education and Research, as well as expert clinical educator faculty in leadership positions in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate medical education.

The ideal candidate for this position will be an outstanding scholar with experience and the ability to engage in and/or lead collaborations in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Current areas of research in the Shapiro Institute include research in critical thinking, communication, learning environment, interprofessional education, simulation, social media, and faculty development in teaching.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements

• PhD or EdD in educational measurement, cognitive psychology, educational psychology, health sciences education, statistics, psychology, sociology, or a related field; MDs with a substantial track record of scholarly activity in medical education research will also be considered. At least 3 years of experience in health sciences education with direct involvement in educational research, program evaluation, and/or management of complex data is preferred.
• Demonstrated skills in statistical analysis and proficiency in use of statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, JMP, and/or R.
• Demonstrated skills in qualitative analysis and proficiency in qualitative data analysis (QDA) software such as Dedoose, Nvivo, or other QDA software.
• Skilled in survey development, administration, and analysis.
• Skilled in conducting interviews and focus groups.
• Experience in leading education research studies, including observational and intervention research.
• Ability to mentor faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students in educational research and scholarship.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and written and spoken communication skills.
• Project management skills.
• Familiar with requirements for ethical and human subjects approval and interactions with institutional review boards.
