The Advanced Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center (GRECC) and University of Maryland is seeking 1 qualified physician and 1 qualified postdoctoral associated health fellow candidate for the 2019-2020 fellowship year. Our well-rounded and rewarding training program provides a stipend for the candidate to pursue a funded career development award.

Our Advanced Fellowship in Geriatrics offers post-specialty education to foster the development of leadership in health care issues for the elderly and advance scholarly pursuits that will benefit the care of elderly Veterans and all older Americans. The VAMHCS GRECC provides a supportive training environment with diverse research experiences in lifestyle modification (exercise, nutrition) in healthy aging and disability conditions in the elderly, mechanistic metabolic research, dementia clinical care and education, rehabilitation for cancer survivors, neurologic disorders, chronic kidney disease, peripheral artery disease, and adults with mobility limitations at risk for falls. Faculty includes nationally recognized experts who work closely and provide mentoring to fellows.

We offer a variety of infrastructural support for the fellowship candidate to pursue their project, including 2 research exercise facilities, laboratories in a tertiary care facility for stress testing and collecting human samples, biostatistical and research compliance support, and outpatient clinics and nursing homes to recruit participants. Our 2 most recent postdoctoral associated health fellows received Career Development Awards from the VA Office of Research and Development.

Physician fellows must have completed an ACGME- or ECCOPT- accredited physician residency program. Physicians whose initial certification is in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Psychiatry must also have completed an accredited subspecialty residency in Geriatrics or other subspecialty.

Postdoctoral associated health fellows must have graduated from an accredited clinical doctoral program including all required residency or internship experiences that prepare them for eligibility for VA employment. In addition, associated health fellows must have completed one year of post-doctoral clinical training in their discipline, preferably but not exclusively in geriatrics. Associated health fellows must be US citizens.
