Sunnybrook Education at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC) in collaboration with The Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) invites applications for a Professorship in Education Research. This is a full time position at the level of Assistant Professor or higher. The Professorship holder will report to the Vice President, Education and the Vice President, Research.


SHSC is the destination for over 4,000 learners from approximately 25 health disciplines. SRI is one of the fastest growing hospital-based research enterprises in Canada with well-established programs in discovery and applied research, developing innovations in care for more than 1 million patients annually. Sunnybrook Education includes 4 priority areas: patient as educator, team-based learning, learner experience and culture and education scholarship. Our vision for education research at Sunnybrook emphasizes collaborative, person-centred interprofessional research that supports innovation in health professions education through scholarly examination of practice-based teaching and learning to improve patient care. The Education Research Unit (ERU) advances education research and scholarship at SHSC with a goal to contribute broadly to the field of education research within healthcare.


The successful candidate will develop an independent program of research in an area relevant to SHSC’s education priorities; collaborate with the Director and Associate Director of the Education Research Unit (ERU) to build capacity and activities to support education scholarship broadly across the organization; will mentor, collaborate, and consult with other education scientists, researchers, clinician investigators, graduate students and learners regarding research programs and projects in education research; lead and contribute to the grant writing process to attain internal and external funding to support research and scholarship activities; and play a role in building capacity related to education research. Previous experience conducting research in academic healthcare settings is required for all potential applicants.


Applicants must have a PhD in a discipline relevant to health professions education with demonstrated expertise in education research. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for academic promotion within 3 to 5 years of the successful appointment to the Professorship. Candidates must have a successful track record of grants and publications in health professions education. Candidates must have the breadth to promote research relevant to the SHSC’s education mission and values including experience in collaborating with and advising interprofessional faculty and trainees. They will possess strong teaching skills and a commitment to excellence in education. The candidate must have the ability to serve a geographically distributed organization and foster collaboration locally, nationally and internationally.


The successful candidate will spend at least 75% of their time on their own program of research. It will be expected that their area of research will be sufficiently broad and well-aligned to advance the SHSC education priorities to also support mentorship and involve collaborative research opportunities across multiple stakeholders at Sunnybrook. The remaining time of up to 25% will be allocated for contributions to the ERU in collaboration with the Director and Associate Director (ERU). These contributions may include: strategic planning, work plan co-creation and implementation, teaching and committee work.


The term of the appointment will be five years, renewable.

Applicants must be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto and the Sunnybrook Research Institute. Academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, as will remuneration.
