The Wound and Ostomy Clinical Registered Nurse functions as an expert consultant to the health care team. The wound and ostomy RN (WO-RN) collaborates with the clinical staff to provide assessment, treatment recommendations, care, and teaching to patients and families with ostomy, wound, continence, and skin care issues within the scope of the specialty practice. He/she demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and support appropriate to the age of patients served in his/her specialty, functions as a resource and role model for the staff, and participates in the application of evidence-based practice and research in the clinical setting. The wound and ostomy RN maintains CWON or CWOCN certification, practices within the UPHS professional practice model, and exhibits UPHS core values as reflected in its mission. Based on a specialized knowledge base, the WO-RN designs, implements and evaluates standards of practice that improve the delivery of high quality, comprehensive care to individuals, families and populations. The WO-RN is a clinical l position that includes the traditional components of patient care, consultation, research utilization and education with the aims of upholding practice standards. The WO-RN actively supports organizational goals through the support of organizational initiatives that integrate evidence-based practice and research, and professional/regulatory standards. A hallmark of WO-RN practice is the management of complex patient-family situations within their scope. The WO-RN serves as a liaison to communicate with the health care team and an advocate for positive change and delivery of appropriate and ethical care. The WO-RN conveys a presence that simultaneously responds to the immediate patient and family needs while empowering others to effectively manage the clinical situation. The WO-RN interacts with staff in a manner that recognizes their developmental needs and promotes their understanding of issues/knowledge and reflective practice. The implementation of any WO-RN position varies and evolves over time in response to patient population needs, new clinical science/evidence, organizational goals and changes within the health system locally and nationally. As such, the WO-RN and appropriate clinical leadership collaborate to determine role and mutually establish clinically relevant accountabilitiesThe WO-RN demonstrates a knowledge base within a specialty area that may include caring for people ranging in age from infancy to the elderly. The WO-RN is self-directed and purposeful in maintaining current professional knowledge and competence within specialty area. The domains of clinical judgment and decision-making, nurse-patient/family relationship, clinical leadership and clinical scholarship frame the work of the WO-RN. Within the professional practice model, the WO-RN facilitates an environment of support that facilitates and preserves the autonomy and accountability of the primary and associate nurse roles.

- Graduate of an NLN approved school of professional nursing. \n- Licensed to practice professional nursing in the state of PA. \n- BSN required/ MSN preferred; CWON or CWOCN Certification required.
